Mesa Lab - 1967

The Mesa Laboratory was dedicated in May 1967. This photo display highlights the Mesa Lab’s first official year as NCAR’s headquarters.

Mesa Lab — Architect I.M. Pei designed the Mesa Laboratory with scientists in mind. Pei incorporated intricate passageways to foster creativity and serendipitous meetings, and created spaces specifically for science and computing. He designed the exterior to blend with the natural beauty of the foothills.

Aerial View of Mesa Lab — Aerial view of the Mesa Laboratory. NCAR’s first director intended for the Mesa Lab to be an integral part of the Boulder community. When the site was selected, leaders at NCAR and the National Science Foundation assured the community that the nearby Mesa Trail and nature area would be left undisturbed and that the community would be welcome to park at the lab to access the trails.
