Mesa Lab - 1967
The Mesa Laboratory was dedicated in May 1967. This photo display highlights the Mesa Lab’s first official year as NCAR’s headquarters.
The Mesa Lab’s two distinct towers were designed to house scientific laboratories and administrative offices. This photo was taken in a lab space on the upper floor of the east tower, which was equipped with the infrastructure needed to support scientific experiments including compressed air, exhaust vents, and water facilities. The north tower was reserved for offices.
Scientists weren’t limited to the labs inside the building. In this photo, a scientific balloon is tested outside the facility. Although this photo was not identified, the balloon is possibly a test version of the Global Horizontal Sounding Technique (GHOST) balloons which were used during a New Zealand field experiment to collect global atmospheric data.
